"STANDING-OUT IN A CROWD" is no longer allowed. Individual Beauty is no-long acceptable.

Tradition.  In the fifties and sixties, life offered a certain “security”.  It was a time when we could rely on sameness-- the expected—the comfortable-- and the familiar.

During the late forties…and into the fifties…Atlantic City, New Jersey was home to The Miss America Pageant.  Year after year, the Pageant grew more popular and its audience grew larger.  In the fifties, when Television became the most exciting Technology anywhere….CBS wowed us by bringing the final night of The Miss America Pageant into American Homes.

Each year, we looked forward to seeing Bert Parks in his formal tuxedo, greeting us…like family. We loved the traditional categories, including Evening Gown Competition, Swimsuit Competition, and Talent Competition. Everyone I knew enjoyed naming their top-ten favorites and…after the finalists were announced…the suspense intensified as we focused on WHO would be named as the new Miss America. The Pageant’s most memorable moment was the finale…when Bert Parks sang:  “There she is….Miss America… There she is…your ideal.”  My friend Bernie Wayne wrote that song especially for the crowning of Miss America. But today,  it's no longer acceptable.

There’s always someone who wants to destroy tradition…someone who wants to throw away the OLD….just because its “OLD”… and create something NEW. Forget that the Miss America Pageant was never in -trouble financially or  threatening to fade in popularity.  Sponsors were standing in line to support The Pageant.   And, there were more-than-enough girls-- from coast to coast-- who dreamed of wearing the crown of Miss America.

I learned last year that The Miss America Pageant had been completely “overhauled” by a former Miss America who’d sued Fox and settled for almost thirty million dollars… and by a former Miss Arkansas who became a well-paid attorney.  Together, the two of them ripped the pageant to pieces.  They destroyed everything/anything that made The Miss America Pageant elegant and the ultimate in traditional beauty.  I watched just long enough to see and smell the pageant’s strong political statement then….changed the channel.  I’ll NEVER watch such a travesty…ever again.  The REAL Miss America Pageant is dead.

SO,  several weeks ago, when I saw that the Miss Arkansas Pageant had moved from Hot Springs to Little Rock and the final night would be televised…I watched to see if “All The Good Was Gone There Too.”

Honestly…. I was embarrassed by everything I saw and heard.  It was appalling to  view such a "rink-a-dink"  disaster,  such a blatant lack of professionalism.  KATV provided the mistress and master of ceremonies--both  amateurs. There was a group called "The Miss Arkansas Dancers" who wasted valuable airtime and were shamefully untalented.

Most sickening to me.... were the contestants.  There was no individuality….everyone looked alike.  All the blondes looked alike, the brunettes looked alike, and, of course, there were the usual “token” blacks.  Forget that there is a BLACK MISS AMERICA PAGEANT which does not allow WHITE CONTESTANTS.

Every contestant had volumes of long, false hair; every contestant wore theatrically- false eyelashes; and every contestant had a mouthful of unbelievably-large white teeth. Every contestant had full breasts, trim hips and….every gown or talent dress worn was classless and cheaply-sexy…with a long slit that opened from “top to bottom.”  The pageant no longer has a swimsuit competition so….contestants “fell all over themselves” to promote every inch of their bodies in everything they wore, even talent outfits! It was disgusting, to say the least.

I know talent and not one contestant in The Miss Arkansas Pageant demonstrated anything close to talent.  In fact…from what I could see…..beyond all the false hair, lashes, and everything else that looked suspicious….there was nothing even resembling BEAUTY.

I lost count of the TV Commercials. They were all tasteless because they promoted  phony enhancements at every level. It was not surprising that the Pageant's major sponsors were Cosmetic Surgery Centers, Cosmetic Dentistry, and Hair & Nail Salons.

Yes, I can say with complete honesty..... The Miss Arkansas Pageant, just like The Miss America Pageant, is stone-cold-dead.
